More Quick Takes

Forgot to mention in my quick takes yesterday two items:

  • There is a great video of this summer's SABR convention available at MLB.com. It does a nice job of highlighting the convention's key moments and is a great commerical for SABR. I wrote a few posts from the convention you can find here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

  • Alfonso Soriano became the first major leaguer in history to record 40 homers, 40 doubles, and 40 stolen bases in the same season. While I'm not a fan of the creation of arbitrary categories this is obviously a significant achievement and one that most analysts did not see coming. Before the season I was asked in a chat what I thought of the Soriano's chances and I was not optimistic given that he had so well at the Ballpark at Arlington last season and was moving to a pitcher's park in RFK. Perhaps his move to the outfield helped his offense or perhaps the supposed talent difference between the two leagues should have been taken into account.

  • Barry Bonds hit his 733rd NL homerun last night tying Hank Aaron who hit his final 22 homeruns for the Brewers in the AL. Yawn.

If bonds achievments meant nothing, it would be the only discussed topic with everything he listed...
