Chat Transcript 1/25

Thanks to everyone who showed up at the chat today. Lots of questions on SFR and defense in general that were very interesting. You can find the transcript here and as always you can use this post for follow-ups.

Dan, when you were discussing the minor league SFR numbers you mentioned translations. Do you expect defense to vary that significantly from level to level?

Obviously if the baselines for what is "average" change between levels than the runs saved would change but it seems like fielding a ball in the Texas League is no different than in the majors. Do you think that if a player is above average at a lower level that will still translate to above average fielding at the majors?

Well, I wouldn't expect that the translations would be as drastic as those used for offensive production, but what I was thinking was of the oft-heard remark of rookies and minor leaguers that the "speed of the game" increases at each level. How hard balls are struck, speed of the runners etc.

I would think would make a difference and so fielding a ball in the Texas League may be different than doing so in the majors. Perhaps not but interesting to look into.
